If you are pregnant, planning to be, or are thinking about giving the gift of a newborn session to someone that is expecting this blog shares some tips on scheduling your newborn session.  When is the best time?   How long after the baby is born should we wait to take the photographs? How do we plan when we don’t know when the baby will arrive?

When is the best time to schedule your newborn session?

• When you are still pregnant.  Most newborn photographers that I know around the country and local to Pittsburgh are booked up months in advance.  Newborn sessions take a lot of time, planning, and patience with your sweet new baby so photographers can only take on so many in a week/month.  Because of this, we start scheduling as early as 12/13 weeks in someone’s pregnancy so if it is February and you are due in September now is a great time to schedule your session!  When clients inquire after they have the baby it is just luck of the week on if a photographer will be able to fit the photographs in within the best range of time for when a newborn is sleepy and posable… which brings us to the next question.

How long after the baby is born should we wait to take the photographs?

• I typically request parents to contact me while they are still in the hospital – a quick email with the baby’s name, weight, and height and to let me know how everyone is doing.  I like to photograph the baby in the 5-10 day range.  If we go past that timeframe, some babies may start to exhibit more signs of gassiness, reflux, colick, etc and getting them to be sleepy and posable may be more difficult.  Photographers want to provide the best possible experience and photographs for each client.  Each baby is different and some are more easy going with poses and photographers than others but we do work our hardest to get those cute sleepy poses.

How do we plan when we don’t know when the baby will arrive?

• Part of why photographer’s book up months in advance is because they have to plan their schedule around the unknown.  Some babies may be born early/late and they may end up with 4-5 newborns born in a week!  We have a short window of when to photograph them (typically 5-10 days old) so we have to plan accordingly.  When the baby is born, we fit them in to our schedule as soon as possible.  We save room around your due date 2 weeks before/ 2 weeks after and if they come earlier or later then we work with that.  We have to be very flexible with our schedules for newborn sessions.
